As catalogued in van Dam, SE24 is the "Small number variety (4mm #)". However, in CARIS (CAnadian Revenue Identification System) , the Catalogue for this 4mm# variety is SKEL24a. The two numbering systems are in reverse of each other. CARIS reports that the lowest # for the SKEL24a was D11400. The new lowest # is now D10001
The van Dam SE24a, SKEL24 (5mm#'s), were the first to be printed. CARIS reports that the large numbers were printed to serial number #9900, however; recently, Ed Zaluski, of CARIS, agreed that when I found # D10001, it was from the first sheet of the SKEL24a (SE24). All of the other stamps, in the scan, offered above, are also from the first sheet.
As my theory, when the last sheet of SKEL24 (SE24a) was printed, with a final # of D10000. it was believed, that the numbers were getting too large to fit in the space provided. Thus, there should be a final sheet out there (or singles / multiples), with the 5mm # range printed from D9901-D10000.
I present an opportunity to own the very first stamp printed in the 4mm # range, along with nine other stamps, all used, in great condition from the first sheet.
