It always makes me wonder...
Who knows how many hands and collections that this stamp has gone through. It's now 149 years old and now I've found it to be an error. This stamp was in a "remnants" part of a collection that I bought, haphazardly placed within a group of other large bill stamp issues with "issues".
A closer look showed the "pre-perforation paper fold" in the lower right corner. The stamp was folded at the edge with a heavy crease and then the sheet was perforated. After perforation, someone unfolded the fold-over and then the stamp didn't have perforations in that corner, while the rest of the stamp was perforated. Over the years, a section came out but the error still shows.
I've put it up for auction, not knowing the value as I couldn't find any other examples and/or prices realized. So, I started it at $24.99 USD which is approximately the book value of the $32 CDN. We'll see what happens. Auction started April 22, 2017.
This sold for asking at $24.99 USD or $34.00 CDN (April 29, 2017)
